Around Phuket

Phuket beyond Phang Nga Bay

The bay takes a full day on its own. Here's how it sits alongside the rest of a Phuket trip, and what to do with the days either side of it.

Give the bay its own day

At roughly 8.5 hours door to door on the later departure, Phang Nga Bay is a genuine full day rather than something to combine with anything else that same date. The sensible way to build a Phuket itinerary around it is to treat it as one full slot, ideally with a lighter day either side, since a boat trip that gets back after dark leaves limited appetite for much beyond dinner nearby.

Phi Phi Islands, the other classic full day

Phuket's other well-known full-day boat trip runs south to the Phi Phi Islands — a different island group entirely, with its own beaches, viewpoints and boat traffic, distinct from Phang Nga Bay's limestone hongs. Travellers with several days often treat the two as separate full-day trips rather than trying to combine them into one impossibly long day at sea.

Old Phuket Town, in smaller pieces

Phuket Town's Sino-Portuguese shophouse streets, markets and street food are easy to fit into a half-day rather than needing a dedicated one, making it a natural way to fill an arrival day, a departure morning, or the evening after a long day on the water.

The Big Buddha and Wat Chalong

Phuket's hilltop Big Buddha and the island's best-known temple, Wat Chalong, are both easily seen in a half-day and pair naturally with each other, giving a land-based counterpart to a day spent entirely on boats and in canoes.

Spacing the long days out

If Phang Nga Bay is one of several full-day excursions on a Phuket itinerary, spacing them rather than stacking them back to back tends to make for a better trip overall — both this tour and a Phi Phi Islands day start early and run long in their own way, and a genuinely easy day between two big ones is worth building in on purpose.

A beach day, deliberately left unplanned

Phuket's west-coast beaches need no booking and no itinerary of their own, which makes an unplanned beach day the easiest way to balance out two long, early-starting boat tours without needing to plan a third big day around them.
